Research interests
Nikolay Dimov joined the Microfluidics and Microengineering Research Group (MMRG), within the University of Hertfordshire’s School of Engineering and Computer Science in 2018 where he engaged in the development of novel lab-on-a-chip biodetection technologies for early identification of biological threats. The MMRG produces turnkey microfluidics-based systems extending from design to development, production, and validation. Similarly, to the research taking place at the MMRG, his work advances at the stable equilibrium of science and engineering that the group’s multidisciplinary structure facilitates. Also, he is a member of the Bioengineering research group, where he investigates novel approaches of isolating and identifying exosomes for clinical and research applications.
Nikolay's primary research interests are in the integration of molecular assays on microfluidic devices that expand the ultimate understanding of biological and clinical events. He has experience with projects which combine miniaturisation of biomedical procedures and analytics with the integration of laboratory unit operations towards point-of-care diagnostics for an advanced screening of diseases. Being a member of the Extracellular Vesicle Research Unit at UH, Dr Dimov is developing a Lab-on-a-Chip purification system with built-in sensors for the simultaneous isolation and detection of exosomes from various biosamples. Capitalising on the groups’ strong experience in engineering and system design, Dr. Dimov's research targets the advancement of microfluidic platforms with innovative analytic technologies which seek to enable automated processing of biological samples with high-fidelity biodetection for diagnostics and prognosis of pathogen-borne diseases.
