Edina Harbinja

Edina is a law lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, School of Law, and a PhD candidate at the University of Strathclyde Law School.

Her thesis (soon to be completed), “Legal aspects of transmission of digital assets on death”, analyses legal issues surrounding transmission of digital assets on death. It explores theories of property and contract and Intellectual property and the theoretical and practical possibilities of applying these concepts in the digital realm and on a range of digital assets. Finally, having determined the nature of these assets, the thesis examines the potential of transmitting some of them and/or their value on death.

The research is funded by the Horizon Digital Economy Hub, Nottingham, and forms part of the work programme of the RCUK funded Centre for Creativity, Regulation, Enterprise and Technology (CREATe – see www. create.ac.uk). It is also supported by the University of Strathclyde King Hugh Fund and the Clark Foundation Scotland.

Her research, broadly speaking, relates to new technologies and law. In that regard, she looks at the relationships between emerging technologies and different areas of law, in particular, privacy and data protection, intellectual property, property, contract law. In addition, her research has a policy focus and aims to explore different options of regulation of online behaviours and phenomena.  

Edina's main areas of interest are: Internet policy and regulation; property, contracts, trust and succession law; intellectual property law; human rights law; privacy and data protection; new technoglies and law.
